The Ethiopian Stock Market: A New Wave to Conquer
Picture this: the golden sands of Seminyak Beach in Bali, one of the finest in the world. Its unsleeping waves call surfers from every corner of the globe. It was there that I found myself, not surfing, but swimming—a simple, carefree activity. Yet, little did I know, this would turn into one of the most profound lessons of my life.
As I swam near the shore, I felt the pull of the ocean’s current. Gradually, I realized I was drifting farther from the beach. Panic set in as the crashing waves buried me under water, only to throw me back up. The more I struggled to swim back, the farther the beach seemed to retreat. My arms grew tired, my breath short. Alone in the vast ocean, I thought this might be it.
Then, I remembered Buddha’s teaching: when something bad comes, don’t fight; be calm. With no other choice, I stopped struggling. I floated on my back, letting the waves carry me wherever they wished. I didn’t know if I’d end up in a different country, but I focused on staying calm and breathing.
Eventually, I regained my strength. Just as I was ready to face the waves again, I spotted a surfer nearby—a beautiful Australian woman enjoying the ocean. I called for help, and she guided me safely back to shore.
Did I become fearful of the ocean after this? Not at all. In fact, I went back to swim again, this time at Kuta Beach. But I did one thing differently: I enrolled in a two-week surfing course to learn how to navigate the ocean.
From Oceans to Markets
That experience didn’t just teach me about the ocean; it prepared me for another vast and unpredictable frontier—the stock market. After taking courses at Lincoln University and Yale University, I entered this global "ocean." It was filled with never-ending currents and turbulent waves. While I understood the concepts, I had no real-world skills to apply them.
This reminded me of a famous story about a professor and a boatman.
A professor and a boatman were crossing the ocean. The professor, eager to showcase his knowledge, asked the boatman if he knew anything about oceanology, meteorology, or swimology. The boatman, a simple man, admitted he knew none of these. The professor shook his head and after earmarking 25% for each “ignorances” of the boatman, he said, “You’ve wasted 75% of your life.”
Suddenly, a massive wave shook the boat. The boatman turned to the professor and asked, “Do you know how to swim?” The professor, now panicked, confessed he didn’t. The boatman replied, “Then you’ve lost 100% of your life.”
The lesson is clear: knowledge without skill is useless. You might understand the theory, but if you can’t apply it, it’s as good as not knowing it at all.
What This Means for the Ethiopian Stock Market
As Ethiopia prepares to launch its stock market, many of us are like the professor—armed with knowledge but no practical experience. Others are like the boatman—eager but untrained. To navigate this new ocean successfully, we must combine knowledge with skill.
Here’s how to approach the market:
Start with Knowledge
Understand the basics of the stock market. Learn how companies are valued, how shares are traded, and what drives market movements. Take courses, read books, and join communities that share insights.Develop Skills
Knowledge is the foundation, but skills are built through practice. Use virtual trading platforms to simulate investments. Learn how to analyze companies and make decisions based on data, not emotions.Find a Mentor
Just as a driving instructor teaches a novice how to drive, a mentor can guide you through the stock market’s complexities. Seek out experienced investors who have navigated similar markets.Cultivate Success Habits
Investing is not about luck—it’s about discipline and consistent effort. Build habits that lead to success, like regularly saving and investing, diversifying your portfolio, and staying informed about the market. Why You Should Start Now
Think of investing like swimming. It’s not just a skill; it’s a lifestyle. Once you learn how to navigate the waves, you’ll start to enjoy the ride. Investing is similar. Imagine traveling the world, living comfortably, and enjoying life’s beauty—all because you planned and invested wisely.
